Home-stays - Experience the Kiwi Way of Life

At Fiordland College, our international students live with carefully selected New Zealand host families.

Staying with a host family is one of the many enjoyable experiences that international students gain during their time in New Zealand.

Living with a host family provides you with a comfortable and friendly family environment and helps you adjust to life in New Zealand. You will also enhance your English language conversational skills in a relaxed atmosphere.

We believe that homestaying is ideally suited to our international students, as it provides a caring and safe environment.

Our homestays are carefully selected to ensure that students have a happy and secure stay in Te Anau. Our homestay families:

  • are carefully selected by us
  • provide a caring home environment
  • are interested in your welfare
  • will be involved in your academic progress
  • will keep in regular contact with staff at school
  • are subject to all the requirements of New Zealand law, including police checks
  • will include you as one of their family.

The International Student Director takes a personal interest in the placement of every student and ensures you are placed in a homestay that best meets your needs.

More information about the New Zealand way of life and what to expect from homestay living can be found in the Student Handbook.

"Having an international student join my family was both an interesting and enjoyable experience. It gave us an insight into a different culture and a different schooling environment. It gave me and my family a new appreciation of some of the things we take for granted that Jojo did not have the opportunity to experience in her own country. While Jojo was here she was able to participate in a variety of sports activities, both in and out of school that were not available to her in Germany. Coming to live with us in New Zealand for a year was a valuable experience both for her and for us."
